Second Season Announcement

TAKOMA PARK-BASED THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES SECOND PRODUCTION, A REGIONAL PREMIERE FEATURING LOCAL ACTORS

Encore Theater Company’s second season features INCOGNITO, an intricate and thought-provoking play that will be produced in April 2022

Takoma Park, Md — February 1, 2022 — Encore Theater Company, a professional nonprofit theater based in the Takoma Park community, announced its second season today. The 2022 season will feature a regional premiere of an intimate play that explores themes of memory and identity and showcases the talents of four local actors: Incognito, by Nick Payne.

“Incognito exemplifies the kind of work we want to be known for at ETC, in that it’s equal parts brain and heart,” said Steve Quintilian, Co-Director of Encore Theater Company. “It’s a complex play that deals with intellectually challenging concepts of memory loss, brain science, and identity, but it’s also deeply human. We hope that our audiences will walk away reflecting on the enduring and evolving nature of relationships, which is such an interesting theme to explore right now.”

Incognito, which will run April 22-24 at the Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center, is a contemporary play in which four actors play a combined 21 characters and tell three interwoven stories, uncovering questions of what we choose to remember and why, and how this shapes our identity. The cast features two Takoma Park residents, Nancy Illman and Seth Rosenke, in addition to Gifty Amponsem of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Sam Lunay of Arnold, MD.

“Incognito connects with my life in so many ways and I feel the stories in it very deeply,” said Illman, who will play five different characters. “It is absolutely a dream come true to be making my professional theater debut with Takoma Park’s own theater company. I hope that my performance inspires at least one person in the audience who is telling herself that it is too late to pursue her heart’s desire. As long as the passion is there, it really is never too late to follow your dreams and make them a reality.”

Performances are Friday, April 22 at 7:30pm, Saturday, April 23 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, April 24 at 2:00pm. General admission tickets are $25, and senior/student discount tickets are $20. Tickets can be purchased through EventBrite. All audience members will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination in order to attend.

Founded in 2020, ETC was the first professional company in the DC area to produce live theatre during the pandemic, mounting a masked and outdoor production of the acclaimed musical Next to Normal for an invited audience in a Takoma Park backyard. The unconventional production garnered praise for being “life-affirming” and completely appropriate to the surreal moment in time that was the summer of 2020.

“We’re committed to continuing to provide both actors and the broader community the opportunity to create and engage in meaningful art right now, and to build on our track record of doing that in whatever way possible,” said Julie Lloyd, Co-Director of ETC. “With Incognito, we heard so much enthusiasm from actors about the opportunity to play so many different characters. We’re excited to take audience members on this complicated and moving journey, as well.”
